Conventional units i.e. On/Off units will start and run at full capacity until they stop. They have a start winding in 1phase compressors and this start winding will draw a lot of current to get the compressor to start. It then runs at full amp draw until it reaches temp and stops. The Inverter units have the ability to run at extremely low frequency or RPM. This enables the unit to start at a very slow rpm and thus there is just about no inrush current. These units can then very the speed of the compressor to minimize electricity consumption of up to 50% over a period.
Most manufacturers uses brushless compressors in the inverter units, which results in an extremely quiet unit and also vibration free. This is evident in mid to smaller vessels where structural noise can be high. The compressors will thus also run longer at a lower speed that prevents constant startups and thus prolongs the life span of the invert Air Conditioning units.
No… The power draw depends on the type of compressor and if it is able to modulate i.e. change speed, and is not dependent on the power supply. A 12V compressor that is an On/Off Compressor will draw approx. the same wattage as its AC or 115V equivalent. We use Wattage as a base line as it is then much easier to see the exact power consumption of any AC or DC unit.
The advantages comes into play when the vessel is being converted to fully DC power supply, or a smaller vessel wishing to run directly off the battery bank. The disadvantage of DC is that the equipment is still expensive, and much thicker cabling needs to be run directly to the batteries or a dedicated buss bar. If the equipment is used mostly while on the dock, then the battery cycle will continue because it cannot be connected directly to an AC power supply.
The important aspects are to keep the drain pan a clean and dry as possible to prevent corrosion. Regularly clean the evaporator filter / screen and the sea water strainer. The unit should be installed in such a way that the electrical box gets sufficient air flow for the electronics. If these items are taken care off then the equipment should last many years.
